Go BackFOCUS: Graphics

Synopsis
FOCUS: Graphics shows how to create four types of graphs: bar charts, histograms, connected point plots and scatter diagrams.

Audience
This course is designed for data processing and business professionals who will use FOCUS to create graphs and charts.

Time
4 - 9 hours

Product Code: FOC104
After completing this course, the student should be able to:

Use the GRAPH request to specify bar charts, histograms, connected point plots or scatter diagrams
Describe parameters that specify graph type and the general appearance of the graph
Control the scaling of the horizontal and vertical axes
Define graphs with single or multiple variables
Describe alternate display devices
Add headings and footings to FOCUS graphs
Use techniques to create graphs with special formats
Introduction to Graphics
Reviews rules for coding FOCUS statements. Shows how to create FOCUS graphics and describes the types of FOCUS graphs. Reviews the parameters which affect graph appearance when used.

Course Conventions
Rules for coding FOCUS statements.  Standards used when showing the format of FOCUS commands, simulating FOCUS sessions, entering GRAPH requests and displaying output.
Graph Types
The GRAPH request to produce FOCUS graphs.  Various types of graphs supported by FOCUS.
Concepts
The X and Y axes.  Parameters that affect the general appearance of the graph.
Graph Parameters
The SET command to specify graph parameters.

Bar Charts
Shows how to create single and multiple variable bar charts and multiple page bar charts.  Describes parameters specific to bar charts.

Controlling the Format
Different types of bar charts by use of the COUNT and SUM verbs in conjunction with the BY clause.
Specifying Parameters
Parameters which affect the appearance of bar charts.

Histograms
Shows how to create single and multiple variable histograms, as well as multiple page histograms.  Also describes the parameters specific to histograms.

Controlling the Format
Different types of histograms by using the ACROSS clause.
Specifying the Parameters
Parameters which affect the appearance of the graph.  Parameters that control the plot.

Connected Point Plots
Shows how to create single and multiple variable connected point plots and multiple page connected point plots.  Describes parameters specific to connected point plots.

Controlling the Format
Requests which produce different types of connected point plots.
Specifying the Parameters
Parameters which affect the appearance of connected point plots.

Scatter Diagrams
Shows how to create single and multiple variable scatter diagrams and multiple page scatter diagrams.  Describes parameters specific to scatter diagrams.

Controlling the Format
Different types of scatter diagrams by use of the PRINT verb.
Specifying Parameters
Parameters which affect the appearance of the scatter diagrams.

Additional Topics
Presents the use of tuning techniques to obtain desired results.  Shows how to create graphs with special formats.  Describes alternate display devices.  Analyzes a sample graph request.

Tuning Techniques
Reproduction of a previously displayed graph with the REPLOT command.  Use of the ?SET command to display all graph parameters currently in effect.  How to produce a graph and report with RETYPE.
Special Formats
Use of column positioning markers to embed data in graphs.  Plotting date fields.  Special considerations.
Alternate Devices
Other types of display devices and their capabilities.  Graph requests for subsequent use.
A Practical Example
Sample graph request to describe its capabilities.  Use of other FOCUS features to manipulate the graph data.
