CMS for New Users introduces IBM's Conversational Monitoring System and explains how to manipulate files, create files, write a simple exec and communicate with other users.

Definition of a timesharing system.  Components of a virtual machine.  QUERY USERS and QUERY DISK commands.

Handling CMS Files
Demonstrates how to use the FILELIST screen and basic commands to manipulate files.  Explains how to use the Shared File System to manage files.
 
Defining Files
The three parts of a file ID.  Naming rules for files.
FILELIST Command
FILELIST command and FILELIST screen.  
Other Commands
TYPE, ERASE, DISCARD, RENAME, COPY, COMPARE and PRINT.
SFS Directory Commands
Shared File System directory structure and naming conventions.  DIRLIST, ACCESS, QUERY ACCESSED, QUERY LIMITS, CREATE DIRECTORY, RENAME and ERASE commands.

Using Execs
CMS EXEC, EXEC 2 and VM/REXX interpreters.  A sample exec with a special variable.  A sample PROFILE EXEC.  How to execute an exec.


Communicating with Other Users
Examines sending and receiving messages and notes.  Explains how to create and modify a NAMES file.  Explains how to share minidisk files.
 
Sending a Short Message
How to query the system for a user ID.  Using the TELL command to send a message.  SET MSG OFF and SET MSG ON commands.
Electronic Mail/Names File
Definition and use of nicknames. How to create and modify an entry in the NAMES file.  How to search for a NAMES file entry.

How to create a note on the NOTE screen. How to send a note to single and multiple recipients.
