Water is usually present in the ground at some depth below the surface (groundwater). An overburden of sands and gravels overlying the bedrock contains most of the water. Sometimes faults in the ore and surrounding rock contain water. Water then flows into the workings, and must be pumped from the mine.

Mining methods using hydraulic sandfill for ground support, require adequate drainage for excess water.
