The first panoramic colour images NASA researchers presented the results of the first soil samples taken from the surface of Mars at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. The scientists said they were surprised to discover the presence of free silica, or quartz, in the Martian soil, suggesting it has a similar composition to that of Earth's.

Processed by NASA technicians, the 180 degree panoramic view is a patchwork of images taken by the Pathfinder, showing full colour images of the Martian surface.

The first images of Deimos Photos of one of the two moons orbiting Mars were also unveiled. Because of a programming glitch, it was thought that Pathfinder would not be able to capture photos of the smaller moon, Deimos, but thanks to the persistence of NASA researchers, the problem was overcome.
