INTERVIEW WITH COREY ANDREWS OF

BY TEUFEL

Teufel: Tell me, how exactly did the band start?
Corey: Well, me and the drummer, Clayton, met at school and decided to get together and play and after we played we thought it would be cool to start a band so we did. Later we got Jason to play bass for us because he had just quit his former band.

Teufel: Jason used to be in a punk band, correct?
Corey: Yes, he wasn't happy playing punk.

Teufel: Ok, what are your main (musical) influences?
Corey: Sepultura, Kataklysm, Fear Factory, Slayer and lots more.

Teufel: Has Jason's punk background influnced the sound of the band?
Corey: Not really because I do most of the song writing and Jason always has been a metal fan, he just never had anyone to play with.

Teufel: So, how long have each of you been playing your instruments?
Corey: Not very long. Jason has been playing for about two years, I also have been playing for about three years.

Teufel: Any training or did you all pretty much learn on your own?
Corey: On our own pretty much with some help from a friend.

Teufel: Ok, so you started the band not too long ago, with little or no training. Did you find the song writing process to be difficult or was it pretty easy?
Corey: At first it wasn't so easy but it comes fairly natural now, however we're evolving some as time goes on, we are becoming more complicated and we sound more like death metal.

Teufel: Do you feel you've improved greatly since you recorded your demo?
Corey: Not greatly but we definately have improved. The demo was rushed however so everything sounds better live because we've worked out the bugs and small changes have been made to some of our songs.

Teufel: Why exactly did you remove five songs from your demo, was it due to poor quality?
Corey: Yes and some of the songs we didn't like any more because they weren't as good as the ones you got.

Teufel: They weren't as heavy?
Corey: That too.

Teufel: How long ago was the demo recorded?
Corey: About four months ago (July '96) and it was recorded over a three day period.

Teufel: So you recorded all ten songs over the three day period and weren't satisfied with five of the songs.
Corey: Basically, yes.

Teufel: Since then have you recorded anything else?
Corey: Sort of, nothing that's good enough quality to put on tape, they basically used to remember the song and see how they sounded.

Teufel: Ok, from what I understand you performed (live) as a band for the first time on Friday (November 8th, 1996) correct?
Corey: Yes.

Teufel: How was it?
Corey: We did quite good but there weren't that many people because it was such a late show.

Teufel: You played at Halifax's Cafe Ole, what's the metal scene like in the maritimes? Is it dead like here in Manitoba?
Corey: Pretty much, there were a few good bands around that are good but not very many. There aren't too many fans of the music either.

Teufel: Mostly pop/country fans?
Corey: Mostly punk actually. Too many punk bands. The older people are into country.

Teufel: Punk? Like what? Sex Pistols and Descendents or poser punk like Offspring and Greenday?
Corey: A lot of hard core punk.

Teufel: Hmm.... it's kinda like that here too, all my friends are into punk, not many true metal fans....
Corey: I know what you mean, it's kind of a pain in the ass!

Teufel: Anyway, what sort of response has your demo received?
Corey: Most people say they like it but we have had negative responses about it especially from people who like punk. But we don't care what they think. : )

Teufel: Have you sent your demo to record labels yet?
Corey: No.... we are going to to wait until we bring out our demo CD. Do you think we should?

Teufel: ASAP (hehehehe). When will that (release of demo CD) be?
Corey: Early in '97, probably January or February.

Teufel: What tracks will be on the album? Will it include the four songs (Mutilation, Reicarnation, Crucifixation and the Goth Song) noted on the official Morbid Atrophy website?
Corey: Policia, Cancer Of The Brain, Insanity, Mental Anguish, Animosity (new), Crucifixation (new) and more. All except Independant Beings. The title of the goth song is Scaling The Walls Of Heaven'.

Teufel: Cool! Will it be prefessionally recorded or will it be a 'garage album'?
Corey: It's going to be recorded at a 24 track studio.... semi-professional I guess....

Teufel: Cool! What are the future plans of Morbid Atrophy? Record with Scott Burns in Morrisound Studios and become very famous? : )
Corey: Sure, why not? : )

Teufel: hehehehehe!
Corey: That would be cool!

Teufel: Any plans of possibly adding a second guitarist sometime in the future?
Corey: If we can find one who has a lot of stamina and can play our stuff....

This interview ended right there, I had forgotten I had to work that day and, after checking my watch, realized that I was an hour late (doh!). No harm done though, unfortunately I was unable to conclude the interview properly, but let me say this; don't be too surprised if you hear the name Morbid Atrophy alot in the near future, I most definately recommend checking them out!
